Madrid beat rivals Atletico 5-4 in Spanish Super Cup semi-final

Real Madrid were able to come out on top against Atletico Madrid following a thrilling extra time win in their Spanish Super Cup semifinal in Saudi Arabia. The result came after two goals were scored late by Madrid, who completed a tense 5-3 win over their rivals. Meanwhile, Atletico’s Antoine Griezmann became the club’s all-time top scorer (174 goals), surpassing Luis Aragones’ record.

Madrid will compete in Sunday’s final against either Barcelona or Osasuna, who face off on Thursday in Riyadh. Atletico initially took the lead with a header by Mario Hermoso in the 6th minute, assisted by Griezmann.

However, Madrid turned the game around with goals from Antonio Rudiger in the 20th minute and Ferland Mendy in the 29th. Griezmann marked a milestone, scoring with a right-footed low shot in the 37th minute. An own-goal by Rudiger in the 78th briefly put Atletico ahead, but Dani Carvajal equalised in the 85th, sending the game into extra time.

Madrid secured victory with an own goal by Savic in the 116th minute and a goal by Brahim Diaz in stoppage time. The match Diaz get a yellow card for taking off his shirt during the celebration. This game was the first of three encounters within a month between the Madrid rivals, with upcoming fixtures in the Copa del Rey and the Spanish league.
