Defending champions Manchester City beat Luton Town 2-1 in an away game after being behind by a goal. The result finally broke a four-game streak without a win. Meanwhile, former champions Chelsea lost 2-0 to Everton in the Premier League.
Manchester City were under pressure in Luton, as they recently drew thrice and suffered a loss. Despite a strong start, they let in a goal just before halftime, trailing 1-0.
However, the team that won three major trophies in 2022-23 kept pushing Luton Town in the second half. They quickly scored two goals within two minutes through Bernardo and Jack Grealish, securing a win.
City looked strong and had control for most of the first half but couldn’t score against Luton Town’s defense. Yet, they made a strong comeback in the second half, scoring twice and earning three points.
With this win, City climbed to 33 points, securing fourth place behind Liverpool (37), Arsenal (36), and Aston Villa (35) after all teams played 16 matches.
But things didn’t go well for former champions Chelsea in Liverpool as they lost to Everton. It was a frustrating afternoon for them as they also picked up two injuries.
For Everton, Abdoulaye Doucoure scored the first goal, his second in two matches, eight minutes into the second half. Substitute Lewis Dobbin netted his first senior Everton goal later in the game, securing the win and extending Everton’s lead over the relegation zone to four points.
Although Everton earned three points, both sides spent most of the 90 minutes without much action. The closest chance in the quiet first half was when Jordan Pickford saved Cole Palmer’s long-range shot.
However, Everton got a clear chance later. Despite a good save from Robert Sanchez against Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s shot, he couldn’t stop Abdoulaye Doucoure from scoring the rebound.
Chelsea faced a major setback with injuries to Robert Sanchez and Reece James, who were forced off the field before Everton scored their second goal from a corner in added time.
