Shikhar Dhawan scored a valiant knock of 70 runs, but his effort couldn’t help Punjab Kings beat Lucknow Super Giants in their IPL 2024 match. LSG won their first match of the season by 21 runs at the Ekana Cricket Stadium, thanks to Mayank Yadav’s impressive bowling figures of 3-27 on IPL debut.

Punjab Kings were chasing a fairly challenging target of 200 runs. Requiring a touch over 10 runs per over to win, Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow started strong, adding 102 runs for the first wicket. Bairstow scored at a rapid pace while Dhawan focused on playing a steady innings. However, Dhawan picked up pace after his somewhat slow start, reaching his fifty with a six off Ravi Bishnoi.
Then, Bairstow hit two sixes in one over, but he was dismissed for 42 by Mayank Yadav. Prabhsimran Singh then hit a four and a six but fell to Yadav after adding 19 runs. Yadav also picked up the wicket of Jitesh Sharma, ending his impressive spell with three wickets.

Despite Dhawan’s efforts, scoring 70 off 20 balls after his fifty, PBKS couldn’t keep up with the required run rate. Liam Livingstone’s late efforts weren’t enough, and Punjab fell short by 21 runs, with 41 needed in the last over. They managed to score 20 off the final over, whcih as not enough. Eventually, LSG claimed their first victory of the IPL 2024 season and earned two points.
