Williamson was initially expected to miss the third T20I in Dunedin on Wednesday. However, his participation in the remaining matches is now uncertain.
New Zealand coach Gary Stead said it’s unlikely he will play the final two T20Is. He added that the team is focusing on the upcoming two-Test series against South Africa starting on February 3. Will Young, who was set to join the team for this part of the series, is a potential replacement for Williamson.
The absence of Williamson provides an opportunity for Tim Seifert, who hasn’t played in the series yet. With Test matches approaching, New Zealand’s priority is ensuring Williamson’s fitness for the longer format.

Stead acknowledged the challenge of playing without Kane Williamson, and said it should be a testing time for the team. He also confirmed that Trent Boult remains a crucial figure in New Zealand’s plans for the 2024 edition. Boult, currently without a central contract, will play in the upcoming ILT20 for the MI Emirates. However, Boult’s availability is unlikely for the T20Is against Australia in February.
