Mumbai Indians send Lucknow Super Giants packing after Madhwal’s fifer in IPL 2023 eliminator

Mumbai Indians (MI) secured a dominant 81-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in their Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023) eliminator match in Chennai. Akash Madhwal took five wickets to secure MI’s win, setting up a clash with defending champions Gujarat Titans in the second Qualifier. Meanwhile, LSG were eliminated from the IPL 2023.

Chasing 183 runs, LSG’s batting got off to a poor start with Prerak Mankad being dismissed by Akash Madhwal for three runs off six balls, caught by Hritik Shokeen. They suffered another blow in the powerplay when Kyle Mayers was caught by Chris Jordan off the bowling of Green for 18 runs off 13 balls. LSG were then 23/2.

Soon, Marcus Stoinis and Krunal Pandya built a partnership, to see them through the powerplay. Lucknow then reached the 50-run mark in just 5.4 overs. By the end of the powerplay, they were 54/2, with Stoinis (28*) and Krunal (2*) at the crease. The duo then hammered 18 runs off Hritik in the sixth over.

However, their partnership was broken by Piyush Chawla, who dismissed Krunal for eight runs off 11 balls, caught by Tim David at long-on, to leave LSG at 69/3 in the ninth over. In the next over, Akash Madhwal demolished LSG’s batting lineup, taking the wickets of Ayush Badoni (1) and Nicholas Pooran (0). LSG were reduced to 74/5.

By 10 overs, LSG were 75/5 despite their strong start. Deepak Hooda (1*) and Stoinis (36*) were at the crease though, offering them a glimmer of hope. But Lucknow dealt a severe blow when Stoinis was run out for 40 runs off 27 balls.

Krishnappa Gowtham was then run out by a direct hit from Rohit Sharma for 2 runs. By then, Lucknow Super Giants were reeling at 92/7 in the 13th over. Soon, Ravi Bishnoi was dismissed by Madhwal for 3 runs while Hooda was run out for 15 runs off 13 balls. By then, LSG were 100/9 in 14.5 overs.

Eventually, Madhwal completed his five-wicket haul, dismissing Mohsin for a duck, as LSG were out for 101 runs in 16.3 overs. Mumbai won by 81 runs and advanced to the qualifier 2 against Gujarat Titans. The winnining team will play the final against Chennai Super Kings.

Madhwal finished with figures of 5/5 in 3.3 overs, while Chris Jordan and Piyush Chawla contributed with a wicket each.

Earlier, Mumbai Indians posted a challenging 182/8 in 20 overs. Solid contributions by Cameron Green, Suryakumar Yadav, and a quick cameo by Nehal Wadhera in the death overs saw them post what turned out to be a match winning total.

New milestones achieved during MI vs LSG qualifier

In their IPL 2023 eliminator match against Lucknow Super Giants, Mumbai Indians achieved a batting record. Their total of 182/8 was the highest score by a team in an IPL playoff match without any player scoring a half-century. This surpassed the previous record held by Sunrisers Hyderabad, who had scored 178/6 against Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 IPL final, with Kane Williamson’s 47 being the highest individual score.

Sunrisers Hyderabad had also scored 174/7 against Kolkata Knight Riders in Qualifier Two, with Wriddhiman Saha’s 35 being the highest score in that match. Rajasthan Royals posted 165/6 against Mumbai Indians in the 2013 IPL Qualifier 2, with Rahul Dravid’s 43 being the top score. In the final of the 2008 IPL, Chennai Super Kings had scored 163/5 against Rajasthan Royals, with Suresh Raina contributing the highest score of 43.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan pacer Naveen-ul-Haq earned himself a place among the top bowlers for Lucknow Super Giants in the Indian Premier League. Naveen took four wickets, conceding 38 runs, marking his personal best bowling figures in the IPL. This achievement ranks as the fifth-best bowling performance by a Lucknow bowler. Notably, Naveen has taken 11 wickets in eight matches this IPL 2023.

Mark Wood currently holds the record for the best bowling figures for the Lucknow Super Giants. He took a five-wicket haul, conceding only 14 runs in their match against Delhi Capitals.
