Mohsin holds nerves as Lucknow Super Giants win thriller against Mumbai Indians

Lucknow Super Giants, led by pacer Mohsin Khan, maintained their composure in a thrilling last-over against the Mumbai Indians at Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow to win by just five runs. The win has further improved their chances of making it to the Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023) playoffs.

Mohsin delivered an exceptional final over, conceding only 5 runs while defending 10. He was up against the explosive duo of Tim David (32*) and Cameron Green (4*). Mohsin’s remarkable performance marked his successful return from a lengthy injury absence.

With this win, LSG have climbed to third place in the IPL 2023 standings, accumulating 15 points. However, they are placed below Chennai Super Kings, who are second and have a better net run rate, despite the same number of points. On the other hand, Mumbai Indians slipped to fourth place after suffering their sixth defeat.

LSG’s recovery from a slow start was largely due to Marcus Stoinis’ knock. He displayed impressive power, smashing an unbeaten 89 off just 47 deliveries. After Mumbai elected to bowl, LSG did well to finish at 177/3 in 20 overs. Mumbai seemed on course to a comfortable IPL 2023 victory but faltered during the second half of their innings, ultimately finishing at 172/5 in their allotted 20 overs.

Mohsin shines with the ball

Despite missing the entire domestic season due to a shoulder injury, Mohsin played a crucial role in securing a significant win for Lucknow in the final over, bringing them closer to a top-four Indian Premier League 2023 finish. Mumbai Indians required 11 runs off the last over with Tim David and Cameron Green at the crease. However, Mohsin remained composed and prevented Mumbai’s big hitters from achieving their target. Bowling well-executed deliveries at hard lengths and wide yorkers, he restricted Mumbai to just five runs.

Although Mumbai suffered a loss, they can still qualify for the Indian Premier League 2023 playoffs. The target of 178 runs was challenging on the given pitch, but Rohit Sharma (37 off 25) and Ishan Kishan (59 off 39) provided hope for an easy chase by establishing a solid 90-run partnership for the opening wicket in just 58 balls.

Stoinis smashes his highest IPL score

Earlier, Stoinis displayed aggressive batting by hammering eight sixes in his powerful IPL innings. This was the Australian’s highest Indian Premier League score. LSG had a shaky start, finding themselves in trouble at 35/3 in the seventh over.

However, Stoinis joined forces with stand-in captain Krunal Pandya (retired hurt after scoring 49) to revive the team’s innings. Towards the end of the innings, Stoinis unleashed his full potential and went on a rampage. He smashed 44 runs off the last 12 deliveries he faced.

Wednesday’s IPL 2023 match will see Punjab Kings take on Delhi Capitals at 7:30 pm IST.
