Gill smashes third IPL 2023 century to see Gujarat Titans through to final

In a thrilling Indian Premier League 2023 (IPL 2023) Qualifier 2 match, Gujarat Titans (GT) came out on top against over Mumbai Indians (MI) after a 62-run victory, on Friday. With this result, the Titans reach their second consecutive IPL final. A third century by star batter Shubman Gill in the IPL 2023 and Mohit Sharma’s five-wicket haul saw GT’s all-round performance earn them a win. Thus, the Titans have earned a spot in the title clash against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Sunday in Ahmedabad. This also makes it their second straight final qualification in the IPL, after debuting last year.

Chasing a mammoth 233 to win, Mumbai were off to a shaky start, losing a wicket in the first over. Mohammed Shami dismissed Nehal Wadhera for just 4 runs, to leave them at 5/1. Shami struck again in his next over, dismissing Rohit Sharma for just 8. By then, Mumbai were was struggling at 21/2.

MI reached the 50-run mark in the fifth over, with Tilak Varma putting up a fight. However, his innings was cut short by Rashid Khan after scoring 43 runs off just 14 balls. Mumbai scored 72 runs for the loss of 3 wickets by the end of the powerplay, with Suryakumar Yadav unbeaten on 12 off 9 balls.

MI reached the 100-run mark in 9.2 overs but continued to lose wickets while maintaining the required run rate. Joshua Little dismissed Cameron Green for 30 runs off 20 balls, leaving MI at 124/4. Suryakumar Yadav was exceptional, reaching his fifty off 35 balls.

They reached the 150-run mark in 14.2 overs after a six from SKY. However, he was dismissed by Mohit Sharma after scoring 61 runs off 38 balls. Mohit also dismissed Vishnu Vinod for 5 runs in the same over. Thereafter, Mumbai Indians’ batting lineup collapsed under the pressure of the required run rate. Tim David (2), Chris Jordan (2), and Piyush Chawla (0) were also dismissed quickly.

In the end, MI were eventually bundled out in 18.2 overs. Mohit Sharma finished with exceptional figures of 5/10 in 2.2 overs. Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami claimed two wickets each, while Joshua Little took one.

Gill remains unstoppable in IPL 2023

Earlier, after being put in to bat first, the Titans’ got off to a solid start with openers Shubman Gill and Wriddhiman Saha providing a strong foundation for a big score. Gill played aggressively and helped GT reach the 50-run mark in six overs. After six overs, GT were 50 for no loss, with Saha (18*) and Gill (30*) at the crease.

Piyush Chawla broke the 54-run opening stand, dismissing Saha for 18 runs. By then, GT were 54/1 in 6.2 overs. Sai Sudarshan then joined Gill at the crease. The latter continued his impressive form, smashing his fifth IPL half-century off just 32 balls.

At the halfway mark, GT were 91/1, with Gill (57*) and Sudarshan (13*) still at the crease. Gill’s power-hitting continued as the innings progressed, as he was the main scorer. He then took on Akash Madhwal in the 12th over, hammering three sixes, gathering 21 runs.

The Titans then continued their assault on Mumbai’s bowlers to eventually end their innings at 232, laying the foundation for a victory.
