India hammer Australia by 99 runs in second ODI

India secured a resounding 99-run victory over Australia using the DLS method, taking a commanding 2-0 ODI series lead. Shreyas Iyer and Shubman Gill contributed centuries, while KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav added impressive half-centuries. Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja both claimed three wickets, leading India to their triumph.

Australia faced a daunting target of 400 runs after Gill and Iyer’s superb partnership of 200 runs for the second wicket, with Gill scoring 104 and Iyer reaching 105. Rahul and Suryakumar further fuelled India’s run spree, with Rahul scoring 52 and Suryakumar remaining unbeaten at 72. This propelled India to their highest ODI score against Australia, reaching 399/5.

Australia made to toil

Australia’s chase didn’t begin well as Prasidh Krishna, replacing the rested Jasprit Bumrah, took two wickets in consecutive deliveries before a rain interruption. The revised target of 317 runs in 33 overs brought spin into play, and Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja exploited it effectively. Ashwin claimed 3-41 in seven overs, triggering an Australian collapse, while Jadeja took 3-42 in 5.2 overs. Despite Sean Abbott’s valiant 54, Australia was all out for 217 in 28.2 overs, marking their fifth consecutive ODI loss.

India’s innings started with Ruturaj Gaikwad hitting two boundaries against debutant pacer Spencer Johnson, but Hazlewood dismissed Gaikwad. Iyer then found his form, striking boundaries against Johnson and Hazlewood, while Gill joined in with aggressive shots.

Gill reached his fifty in 37 balls, and Iyer followed suit, reaching his half-century in 41 balls with a six against Johnson. Iyer went on to score a century in 86 balls before getting dismissed, while Gill notched his sixth ODI hundred in 92 balls. Ishan Kishan then added quick runs before his dismissal. Rahul and Suryakumar continued the assault, with Suryakumar smashing 72 off only 37.

Chasing a daunting target, Australia’s Matthew Short and Steven Smith fell to Prasidh Krishna in quick succession. David Warner and Marnus Labuschagne provided some resistance, but Ashwin’s spin turned the game around. Warner tried batting right-handed but was out lbw to Ashwin. Josh Inglis was also trapped lbw by Ashwin. Jadeja cleaned up Alex Carey and Adam Zampa, and Green was run out. Abbott and Hazlewood staged a late fightback with a ninth-wicket partnership but were eventually dismissed, sealing India’s comprehensive victory.

The result was exactly what the Men in Blue needed as they prepare for the World Cup.
