India’s impressive run in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 continued as they handed South Africa a significant 243-run defeat, marking the Proteas’ largest loss in ODIs. The match took place at the Eden Gardens Stadium.
India were guided by stellar performance from their bowlers, led by Ravindra Jadeja, who claimed a five-wicket haul. In the first innings, birthday boy Virat Kohli hit a patient century, guiding India to a big total.

The Indian bowlers started strongly, with Mohammad Siraj dismissing Quinton de Kock for just 5 runs. In the Power-play, left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja took the key wicket of Proteas’ captain, Temba Bavuma (11).
Jadeja continued to shine by capturing four more wickets. He dismissed Heinrich Klassen (1), bowled out David Miller (11), cleaned up Keshav Maharaj’s off-stump (7), and caught Kagiso Rabada (6) off his own bowling. Jadeja became only the second Indian spinner to achieve a five-wicket haul in World Cup history. Yuvraj Singh was the first to do so in 2011 against Ireland.

Mohammed Shami also played a pivotal role, taking two wickets by removing Aiden Markram (6) and Rassie van der Dussen (13). Kuldeep Yadav contributed with two wickets as well, sending Marco Jansen (14) and Luni Ngidi (0) back to the pavilion.
With this win, India extended their winning streak to eight matches in the World Cup 2023, maintaining an undefeated record with one more game remaining against the Netherlands. India currently holds 16 points from eight games and is the sole unbeaten team in the tournament.

The highly anticipated was a one-sided affair, as India secured the win comfortably. South Africa’s innings didn’t even last for 30 overs.
India are set to finish at the top of the points table in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023 league stage. They have won all eight of their games. South Africa, on the other hand, remain on 12 points after their second loss in three matches chasing.
