Luis Suarez recalled to Uruguay squad for World Cup qualifiers

Uruguay’s national team has recalled Luis Suarez for FIFA World Cup qualifying clashes against Argentina and Bolivia. The striker earned his spot in the squad after his remarkable performances for Brazilian club Gremio, where he scored 23 goals and provided 16 assists in the current season.

Luis Suarez was absent from international duty going all the way back to the previous World Cup in Qatar. Many thought manager Marcelo Bielsa did not require his services. However, Bielsa made significant changes by also including Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur and defender Jose Maria Gimenez, both returning from lengthy injury spells.

Missing from the selection was Luis Suarez’s longstanding strike partner in the national team, Edinson Cavani. Cavani, who is yet to feature for Uruguay under Bielsa, was sidelined due to an injury sustained while playing for Argentine club Boca Juniors last Sunday.

Meanwhile, Uruguay, Brazil, and Venezuela follow with each team carrying seven points from four matches.
