Jasprit Bumrah had been sidelined from competitive cricket since late September the previous year when he withdrew from the T20Is against South Africa due to a back injury. Subsequently, he missed both the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia and the Asia Cup in the UAE.
Although he attempted to make a comeback for the ODI series against Sri Lanka in January, he was withdrawn on the eve of the series opener in Guwahati as a precautionary measure to build his bowling resilience after undergoing a back surgery in New Zealand.
