Bangladesh struggled from the start after choosing to bat first. They lost wickets regularly, despite an opening partnership of 29 runs by the openers. Mahmudul Hasan Joy went out for 14, while Mushfiqur Rahim and Shahadat Hossain Dipu fought back with a 57-run partnership. Dipu made 31 runs, Mehidy Hasan Miraz scored 20, and Rahim hit 35 before an unusual dismissal for obstructing the field.
New Zealand’s bowling attack was led by Mitchell Santner and Glenn Phillips who picked up key wickets. Santner finished figures of 3/65, while Phillips took 3/31. Ajaz Patel got two wickets for 54 runs in 17 overs, and Tim Southee, the captain, claimed the final wicket as Bangladesh finished at 172.

New Zealand’s batting started well but quickly deteriorated. Conway, Latham, Williamson, Blundell, and Nicholls fell rapidly. Mitchell and Phillips were unbeaten at the end of the day. New Zealand ended at 55/5, trailing by 117 runs in the second Test. Bangladesh’s spinners, particularly Mehidy Hasan Miraz and Taijul Islam, did the damage, taking crucial wickets.
