Premier League: Salah scores twice in Liverpool home win

In-form Mohamed Salah scored twice for Liverpool as the Reds defeated Brentford 3-0 at Anfield in their Premier League game. The result extended Jurgen Klopp’s team’s flawless record in home games for the 2023-24 season. Liverpool have won all nine home matches across various competitions this season. Each time, they won by a margin of at least two goals.

The match saw two goals from Darwin Nunez disallowed due to offside rulings within the initial half-hour. Nunez scored from Dominik Szoboszlai’s deflected shot, but was flagged offside. The decision, however, was upheld by VAR. Then, Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo was denied by Alisson in the 32nd minute.

Liverpool capitalized on an opportunity six minutes before the break as Nunez set up Salah. Salah is the first Liverpool player to score in each of the club’s initial six home league matches of a season. He also joined Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry as only the third player to either score or assist in 15 consecutive home Premier League appearances.

The connection between Nunez and Salah proved prolific once again, marking Nunez’s seventh Premier League assist, all attributed to Salah. This is only the third time in the league’s history where a player’s first seven assists have been for the same teammate.

Salah missed an opportunity to further Liverpool’s lead before halftime as he failed to convert Alexander-Arnold’s superb long ball, volleying it over the bar from close range.

Salah redeemed himself shortly after the hour mark. He headed in a goal at the back post from Tsimikas’ cross, who kept the ball in play. Tsimikas provided a second assist, setting up Diogo Jota, who hammered the ball into the net.
