Earlier, on Tuesday, second-tier side Middlesbrough handed Chelsea a shocking 1-0 defeat in the first of the semifinals. Fulham, too, looked to cause an upset at Anfield after Willian helped his side lead in the 19th minute.

In the first half, the Reds were without Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah. The two stars were unavailable due to injury and participation in the Africa Cup of Nations, respectively. A crucial change was made in the 55th minute, bringing in Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo. The move turned out to be a positive one.

Nunez played a role in both goals, with Curtis Jones scoring in the 68th minute after a deflection off Tosin Adarabioyo. Nunez then provided an assist for Gakpo to score in the 71st minute. Although Liverpool could have increased their lead, goalkeeper Bernd Leno made a crucial save from Nunez in the 89th minute.

The result gives Liverpool an advantage for the second leg of the English League Cup at Fulham’s Craven Cottage on January 24.
