Lautaro Martinez, who played a crucial role in Inter Milan’s journey to the Champions League final by scoring important goals against Benfica and city rivals AC Milan, continued his stellar performance by netting two goals in a comeback victory of 2-1 against Fiorentina to successfully defend the Italian Cup title on Wednesday.

This triumph marks Inter’s second trophy of the season, having previously defeated Milan to win the Italian Super Cup in January. Martinez also found the net in that match. Following a few remaining Serie A matches, Martinez and Inter have their sights set on securing one more trophy. That is, when they face City in the Champions League final on June 10 in Istanbul.

With his two goals against Fiorentina, Martinez has now reached a career-best tally of 27 goals across all competitions for Inter this season. He also played a crucial role in Argentina’s World Cup win in December. Additionally, Martinez stands out as the only player to have appeared in all 54 of Inter’s matches this season.

The match at the Stadio Olimpico was filled with excitement right from the start. Fiorentina’s Nicolas Gonzalez took advantage of a defensive lapse by Inter and scored within three minutes. A cross from Jonathan Ikone found Gonzalez who was able to knock it in at the far post. However, Martinez took charge of the game and turned the tide in Inter’s favor by scoring before halftime, putting his team in the lead.
