Manchester City controlled possession and created numerous scoring opportunities. Rico Lewis, one of the six changes made by Guardiola, came close to scoring, but his shot was cleared off the line. Young Boys goalkeeper Anthony Racioppi then made a crucial double save, first denying Kyle Walker from a free-kick and then reacting swiftly to prevent Phil Foden from scoring.

City eventually broke the deadlock when Matheus Nunes was fouled inside the penalty box. Then, Haaland stepped up to convert the spot-kick. Just before halftime, the defending champions seized control as Foden scored a superb goal. He received a pass from Jack Grealish, dribbled around a Young Boys defender, and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom-left corner.
