Jasprit Bumrah had been sidelined from competitive cricket since late September the previous year when he withdrew from the T20Is against South Africa due to a back injury. Subsequently, he missed both the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia and the Asia Cup in the UAE.

Although he attempted to make a comeback for the ODI series against Sri Lanka in January, he was withdrawn on the eve of the series opener in Guwahati as a precautionary measure to build his bowling resilience after undergoing a back surgery in New Zealand.

Bumrah has been recovering at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru since his surgery. Similarly, Prasidh Krishna was out of action since last year due to a stress fracture in his back, which also required surgery and rehabilitation at the NCA.
