Following a frustrating defeat to China in their opening match, India struck late to secure a narrow win against Bangladesh after captain Sunil Chhetri converted a penalty in the 85th minute. The Asian Games win at the Xiaoshan Sports Centre was crucial for India, providing them with a lifeline for qualification hopes.
With this, The Blue Tigers have climbed to the third position in Group A, with three points from two matches. The top two teams from each group, along with four of the six best-placed third-placed teams, will advance to the round of 16.

India started off the game on a strong note with Bryce Miranda making significant passes from the flanks. In the added time of the first half, India launched a concerted attack, taking three shots, including attempts by Chhetri and Rahul KP. However, all their efforts were saved, leaving the score tied at 0-0 at halftime. The second half then began with Rahul missing a golden opportunity. In the 57th minute, Dheeraj displayed his skills after a defensive lapse almost allowed Bangladesh a scoring chance.

In the 64th minute, Kynshi’s long-range free-kick struck the post, coming close to breaking the deadlock. Nevertheless, in the 77th minute, Bangladesh had a near-scoring opportunity, but Dheeraj produced an outstanding save. The game took a decisive turn in the 83rd minute when a penalty was awarded to India following a challenge on Bryce inside the penalty area. Chhetri calmly converted the penalty, giving India the decisive lead. The Indian team’s defence fought hard for the remainder of the game, as they managed a tight 1-0 win, collecting three crucial points.
