Arsenal beat City after Martinelli’s late goal in Premier League

Gabriel Martinelli’s late goal secured a 1-0 victory for Arsenal over Manchester City, ending a 12-game league losing streak against the defending champions. The Emirates Stadium erupted in celebration, signifying a potential shift in Premier League dominance towards Arsenal.

With only two points separating them and 30 games left, the result fuels Arsenal’s belief in ending a 20-year title drought, currently sharing the same points as leader Tottenham.

Last season, City clinched the title, but this win is a significant statement during Mikel Arteta’s tenure. Arsenal had not earned a league point against City since 2017, breaking a historic losing streak.

The match lacked excitement for the first 85 minutes, but City’s formidable attack was uncharacteristically subdued. Erling Haaland didn’t manage a single shot, and City had only four attempts overall, their lowest under Guardiola.

This consecutive league loss for City, following a 2-1 defeat to Wolves, is their first since 2018. Meanwhile, Liverpool drew 2-2 with Brighton due to defensive errors, including a mix-up between Virgil van Dijk and Alexis Mac Allister, allowing Brighton to take an early lead.

Newcastle’s impressive winning streak ended with a 2-2 draw against West Ham, despite Alexander Isak’s two goals. Tomas Soucek had initially put West Ham ahead, denying Newcastle a fifth consecutive win. Meanwhile, Aston Villa missed an opportunity to enter the Premier League’s top four, drawing 1-1 with Wolverhampton.
