Andre Russell made a strong comeback in international cricket as the West Indies registered an impressive four-wicket win against England. It was Russell’s first international match in over two years. He took three wickets and scored an unbeaten 29 runs off just 14 balls. The West Indies chased down England’s total of 171 with 11 deliveries to spare at the Kensington Oval in Barbados.
The run chase was the highest ever at the Kensington Oval, surpassing the previous best of 155/5 by the West Indies against England in 2014. Russell was named Player of the Match.
This performance should give the West Indies confidence for the T20 World Cup, which is just less than six months away. Andre Russell helped turn the game around for the West Indies after England’s strong start by Phil Salt and Jos Buttler.
Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers also played well for the hosts before a brief rain delay. Meanwhile, some impressive bowling by Rehan Ahmed gave England hope. However, Russell and Rovman Powell guided the West Indies to victory, setting up a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
The two teams will play in Grenada on Thursday.
